http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?p=12482045My personal opinion (as a 30-year BMW veteran, and engine builder for longer than that) is that engines which are "broken-in" on synthetic oil take an abnormally long time to truly break-in, and if they`ve been driven very conservatively, it`s quite possible that it NEVER achieved proper break-in, allowing the rings to fully seat & seal the cylinder walls against oil blow-by. This is why BMWNA will try to sell you their bullsh!t story that "a quart every 750 miles is perfectly acceptable"
http://forum.bmw5.co.uk/topic/44376-bmw-m54-530i-oil-consumption-so-whats-the-real-deal/I read somewhere if the correct 'running in' [and I know they don't use that term anymore] driving mode is used, it helps the engine bed-in and prevents a thirst later in life.
...Yep, being too gentle with an engine when it's new prevents the rings bedding in properly and creates an eternal thirst for oil.
...AFAIK, the time at which the increased oil consumption became a norm (on cars babied early on) was about the point they went to fully synthetic oil for the first fill, making it harder for the piston rings to bed in nicely.
